Title

It Is The Honorable Thing To Do

Scripture
The eye that mocks his father, and scorns obedience to his mother, the ravens of the valley will pick it out, and the young eagles will eat it.
(Proverbs 30:17)
Devotional
This vivid metaphor depicts how repulsive it is to God for children to mock and disobey their parents. Time and again the scriptures command that children honor their parents. The command does not say that they are to be honored if they are honorable, it simply says, "Honor your father and mother."[14] Just incase we miss it God repeats the command eight different times. He knows children; saying it once is not enough. God and noble man have little use for rebels. They may be popular among their peers, but their peers will likewise receive the recompense of their actions. A wise child will honor his or her parents far above his or her friends. Friends will come and go, but parents last for a lifetime. We cannot escape their heritage. It is in us. Therefore if you have mocked or rebelled against them, repent, turn around and make amends. It is the honorable thing to do.

Many years ago I heard this simple yet profound truth at a Promise Keepers event and it changed my life. I then realized that I had to forgive my father for leaving my Mother and the rest of my family, I needed to honor him, regardless of whether he was deserving of honor. I wrote him a letter and forgave him and discovered this wonderful truth. In doing so, I removed the dead stinking albatross carcass that I was carrying around my neck. I was the one who was healed that day. What a blessing!!!!!
