How To Swallow A Camel

Scripture
Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!
(Matthew 23:24)
Devotional
The Pharisees were the self-religious of Christ’s time. They were those who complicated religion for the sake of self-exultation. They would put burdens on people that they did not and could not keep. Life was no more than a list outward regulation. Character was external only. All that mattered was the outward appearance. Jesus called them, “Whitewashed tombs which appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones…” They would swallow the complexity of their sin which Christ compared to as swallowing a camel. They would likewise choke on the simplicity of the gospel, which He likewise compared to straining on a gnat. Thus is the way of man made religion; which is any religion void of Christ. The more complex man can make life the more self-rule he seeks. Whether it is government or religion, if you can be persuaded to swallow the camel, then Pharisaic elitism will rule.
