Leaders Have Fewer Options

Scripture
Then the Lord spoke to Moses saying,…“Speak to the rock…” Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock…
(Numbers 20:8-11)
Devotional
Leaders have fewer options than followers. Moses was the leader of the nation of Israel. He received his direction directly from the Lord. The directions were simple and clear, “Speak to the rock.” The Lord God wanted the people to see his power and ability to supply all their needs. Therefore He was going to chastise the people by the power of His word. Instead of Moses speaking to the rock and thus smiting the people, he struck the rock and spoke to the people. This one act of disobedience kept the humblest man alive from entering into the promised land. As leader, Moses had no options. He had received divine direction and that direction was to be followed. The scriptures are clear, “For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required…” If you seek or are called to leadership, your responsibility is greater and your options are fewer. Nevertheless, your directions are clearer. Therefore, when you lead, follow them.
