Intoxications and addictions are the ruin of many good people. There was a time that these terms applied only to drugs and alcohol. Today, we have people addicted to just about everything. There are folks addicted to different types of entertainment, various foods, and all sorts of unrighteousness. The result of these intoxications and addictions is poverty; not just financial poverty, but physical, emotional, intellectual and above all spiritual poverty. It is not a matter of avoiding these things. You cannot avoid food for example. It is a matter of wise abstinence from some and moderation with others. The key word in our text is “glutton.” Gluttony is intoxicating. Too much of just about anything can alter the mind and physical body. It is through gluttony that addictions come. Abstain from the sinful and be moderate with the physical. Do nothing that would place you in an unnatural state of mind.
