Everyone Is Religious

Scripture
Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious.”
(Acts 17:22)
Devotional
Everyone is religious. Some are religious about things of faith. Others are religious about political convictions; and many others are religious about everything from sports to music. We quite simply are a very religious people. However, most if not all of these religions are empty. James says it this way, “If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.” Having a religious zeal for anything other than Christ is useless. Taking up a cause for the sake of the cause, or standing for a right without Christ being the center of that cause or right is worthless in the sight of God. James also says, “Religion that God accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
