Title

It Is Not Our Talent

Scripture
You see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called.
(1 Corinthians 1:26)
Devotional
When God calls, He obviously does not necessarily call according to our innate abilities; He more than often calls according to our weaknesses. There are two things I do that are not natural for me: public speaking and writing. Nevertheless, these are the very things He has called me to do. I am most definitely not one of the “not many”. The reason is clear, “that no flesh should glory in His presence.”(1) When I speak or as I am writing this devotion, I am the proverbial “duck out of water.” Nevertheless, I see my calling. It is a matter of obedient faith, not talent, ability, or even giftedness. I think the key is, “not according to the flesh.” I think Zechariah may have said it best, “’Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts.”(2) Therefore, as you seek your calling, do not necessarily look toward your natural abilities, but look toward those areas in your life that will give God the glory.

(1) 1 Corinthian 1:29, (2) Zechariah 4:6
Thought For The Night

We have nothing to do with how much ability we’ve got, or how little, but with what we do with what we have. The man with great talent is apt to be puffed up, and the man with little (talent) to belittle the little. Poor fools! God gives it, much or little. Our part is to be faithful, doing the level best with every bit and scrap. And we will be if Jesus’ spirit controls.”  S.D. Gordon, Quiet Talks on Prayer.
