Title

Do Not Be “Evangelastic”

Scripture
A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who speaks lies will not escape.
(Proverbs 19:5)
Devotional
The apostle John said, “No lie is of the truth.” There is no such thing as divine deception. God does not and He will not allow His people to use a lie to get to the truth. A lie can only propagate another lie. Even a partial truth is a false witness. We are not to be “Evangelastic” in our speaking. The truth cannot be stretched. The truth is not elastic. If it is stretched it breaks, and a broken truth is a lie. Therefore we are to heed the warning of our text. There is a price to pay for any kind of lies. There is great freedom in truth telling. Jesus said, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” If you cannot tell the truth about a matter, do not tell anything at all. The truth withheld is not a lie, unless our silence is deceiving. If we attempt not to deceive, we will keep from telling a lie. Use the truth wisely. Avoid a lie always.

Morning Study Guide
Defining:  “False witness”: Whether in word or deed, facial expression or posture, anything less than an honest presentation is a false witness—as are exaggerations, embellishments, and innuendoes.

Referencing: “He who hates, disguises it with his lips, and lays up deceit within himself; when he speaks kindly, do not believe him, for there are seven abominations in his heart; Though his hatred is covered by deceit, His wickedness will be revealed before the assembly,” Proverbs 26:24-26.

Applying: Remember, any manipulation of the truth is a blatant lie.
