Love Corrects

Scripture
My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; for whom the Lord loves He chastens…
(Hebrews 12:5-6)
Devotional
If we lived our lives without correction, we would be no better than barbarians. Just as a natural child requires discipline, so does a child of God. Without it, ruin and heartache will surely be the result. God loves us too much to leave us to our own devices. We likewise ought to love our children by chastising them faithfully. The writer of Hebrews goes on to say, “Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” Therefore, be thankful that you are chastised by the Lord. Likewise, be diligent to chastise those that God has placed in your care. Think about this: if God does not chasten us, our text says that we then are not loved. Therefore, if we fail to chastise our children, are we truly expressing our love for them?
