The Blessings of Godly Fear

Scripture
By the fear of the Lord one departs from evil.
(Proverbs 16:6)
Devotional
My greatest motivation as a child to be good was the fear of my father and mother. I can remember playing the greatest ballgame of all time with the guys. The score was tied and I was to carry the ball for the winning extra point. Out of the noise of the alley, I heard that all familiar whistle (My dad’s whistle could be heard for miles). I handed the ball to Peewee Johnson and said, “I’ve got to go.” I gave no explanation and no explanation was needed. I knew and the guys knew that Tony’s dad was calling him home. When my dad whistled, I could make it home faster than the echo. Why? I did not want my dad to whistle twice, because the third whistle would be on my sweet by-and-by. Here is what I knew as a child: number one, my parents loved me very much and had nothing but my best interest in mind. Secondly, godly fear and love go hand in hand. The greater the fear, the greater the love. Therefore I fear having to make God whistle twice for me because I love Him and He loves me.
