Title

The Heart and the Drunkard

Scripture
I shall have peace, even though I follow the dictates of my heart
(Deuteronomy 29:19)
Devotional
The Bible is clear, “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked; who can know it” If we think that we can be at peace by doing our own thing without regard to the things of God, we are of all people most foolish. God compares those who follow their own hearts to drunkards. Drunks are emotional people. They will cry at the fall of a hat and eventually pick a fight with the hat. Drunks for a time appear happy, filled with laughter and humor. Inevitably, however, their merriment will turn to slothfulness, anguish and pain. Those who follow the dictates of their own hearts are as dangerous as the drunkard is and just as foolish. As the drunkard needs to find sobriety from the foolishness of drink, those who follow their own hearts must find sobriety from their own dictates. Both the drunkard and the foolish hearted can find sobriety in Christ.
