Title

The Purpose of Leadership

Scripture
Moses spoke to the Lord, saying, Let the Lord… set a man over the congregation.
(Numbers 27:15-16)
Devotional
Moses, the leader of the nation of Israel, was taken to the top of a mountain to see the Promised Land. God showed him the land that he would not enter. The godly character of Moses is once again revealed. Instead of pleading his case so that he might enjoy the fruit of his labor, his concern was for a successor to his leadership. This is the sign of greatness in leadership. The position is not as important as the task. Moses knew that the people needed a leader. Therefore, he sought someone to mentor for the position. Before he left he had Joshua take over certain areas of leadership. He furthermore honored Joshua before the people so that when he departed they would follow him. Moses did not set himself up as an irreplaceable monarch. He immediately sought an heir to disciple and lead the people. Moses understood that leadership is not an end to itself. Leadership is to accomplish the will of God in the ones being led.
