Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near.

I can just imagine Jesus as a child learning this simple story on the knee of Joseph. Now, in His ministry teaching a profound truth to His disciples. ?As in all the parables of Jesus, the lessons are many. We are to teach our children the truths of nature. We are to likewise continue to learn from those truths and apply them to our everyday lives. Here Jesus teaches us to be observant and to know the signs of the times. To ignore our surroundings is not only foolish, but also dangerous. ?I am amazed at the people who pride themselves in their ignorance of current events. Their world is either too small or their ego is too big. A wise man needs to know what time it is. Therefore, we too are to learn the parable of the fig tree. Note that the Lord said “learn.” Learn to teach your children. Likewise, learn to watch and observe the times and the seasons.
